Why is Uninsured Motorist Coverage Necessary?

If you were injured in a car accident, you naturally assume that the at-fault drivers insurance will cover your injuries and the damage to your car. But what if the other driver does not carry insurance? Up to half of all Philadelphia drivers do not carry automobile insurance. The odds are quite good that if you are involved in an accident, the other drivers insurance company will not be available to pay for damages or your medical bills.

What can you do in this circumstance? If you have purchased uninsured motorist liability coverage with your own automobile insurance company, you can turn to your own insurer to cover your physical injuries and the damages to your car up to the limits of the uninsured motorist (UM) policy.

What is Underinsured Motorist Coverage?

In some cases, you may be hit by another driver, and while the at-fault driver has insurance, it is not in an amount that is sufficient to cover your medical injuries and property damages. And other than the insurance policy, this at-fault driver has no other assets that could be available to cover your damages. In that case, you probably will not be able to obtain adequate compensation for your injuries unless you have purchased a policy that is referred to as underinsured motorist coverage. Underinsured motorist coverage can be tapped for situations where the at-fault driver does not have adequate policy limits to cover your medical liability and property damages.

The attorneys of Silvers, Langsam & Weitzman advise you to contact MyPhillyLawyer.com if you have been in a car accident and the at-fault driver does not have insurance or does not have insurance that is sufficient to cover your medical injuries and property damages. You may have a claim against your own insurer. Contact us to arrange a free consultation and case evaluation.
