Risks Of Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), intended for men whose blood level of the hormone testosterone is below a certain level (known as low-T), has been shown to increase the risk of heart attack and other serious medical problems. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in January 2014 that men taking TRT were at increased risk for ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction and death. The FDA further stated that it would continue to investigate.

TRT comes in a variety of forms, most commonly topical gels and creams or as an injection. The goal of this therapy, however it is taken, is to improve sex drive, strengthen bone density and build muscle. Unfortunately, two studies indicated that the risk of negative outcomes may outweigh the benefits. This risk is especially pronounced in patients within the first three months of treatment. One study also suggested that men over 65 were two to three times more likely to experience heart attack during the first 90 days of TRT treatment. The results were similar for men under 65 with a history of heart disease.
