{"id":3199,"date":"2009-09-23T14:03:54","date_gmt":"2009-09-23T20:03:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.myphillylawyer.com\/?p=269"},"modified":"2018-06-28T17:12:32","modified_gmt":"2018-06-28T22:12:32","slug":"ford-motor-co-joins-growing-fight-to-ban-texting-while-driving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.myphillylawyer.com\/yue\/2009\/09\/23\/ford-motor-co-joins-growing-fight-to-ban-texting-while-driving\/","title":{"rendered":"Ford Motor Co. joins growing fight to ban texting while driving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The push to ban drivers from texting  while operating motor vehicles  on America&#8217;s roadways just got a powerful and influential  ally recently  &#8212; the Ford Motor Co.\u00a0 is the first automaker to embrace  a proposed new law that would cut federal highway funding by 25% to states that refuse to  outlaw the dangerous practice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ford supports a ban on hand-held text messaging while driving \u2013 and we endorse the legislation introduced by Senator Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) that would encourage a more rapid transition to hands-free and voice-activated technologies,&#8221;\u00a0  Sue  Cischke, Ford&#8217;s Group Vice President for Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering,\u00a0 said in a statement.\u00a0 &#8220;This legislative approach addresses a nationwide problem we can all agree is necessary to improve safety.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"425\" height=\"350\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/JNN2E-f8nNk\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><em>Watch this public service announcement from British television (posted on YouTube.com), for a graphic depiction of the dangers of texting while driving a motor vehicle.\u00a0 Caution &#8212; this video is very graphic and disturbing. <\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is good news for all of us on the roadways, and more needs to be done to pass national laws that will prohibit operators of motor vehicles from texting while driving.\u00a0 All the evidence so far, in study after study,\u00a0 shows clearly that drivers who are distracted by texting instead of keeping their eyes on the road are dangerous, and that means they are involved in a higher rate of accidents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At Ford, we think driver distraction is a critically important issue,&#8221; Cischke wrote.<\/p>\n<p>So do we.<\/p>\n<p>And by banning texting while driving, everyone will be safer.<\/p>\n<p>There are still other issues, of course.\u00a0 Drivers will still be able to use cell phones while driving &#8212; the Schumer bill only addresses texting.
