Jenkins\ncrossed the road&#8217;s centerline and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courier-journal.com\/story\/news\/2019\/10\/04\/kentucky-news-company-must-pay-32-m-dui-crash-killed-nurse\/3863744002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crashed\nhead-on into her vehicle<\/a>, according to an Oct. 4 story by <em>The\n(Louisville) Courier Journal<\/em>. Garmon suffered serious injuries and died\nfive days after the crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truck driver, who was employed by Atlas\nExcavating, was tested after the crash and was found to have marijuana in his\nbloodstream, the story reported. His employer allegedly allowed him to work\nwithout having completed a pre-employment drug screening, the report continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Garmon&#8217;s legs and pelvis were broken in the crash and\nshe was trapped in her vehicle for more than an hour while firefighters worked\nto extract her. She succumbed to her severe injuries dive days later. Garmon,\nwho has two children, was returning from a patient visit when she was struck. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jenkins was charged after the crash with murder and\nDUI and pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter. He was sentenced to six\nyears in prison. Jenkins allegedly smoked marijuana in the hours leading up to\nthe wreck, along with taking Loritab and Valium pills, according to court\ndocuments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The jury deliberated about 2 \u00bd hours before returning\nits verdict, which included $10 million in punitive damages and $5 million for\npain and suffering.
