Car Crash Lawyer Reaches $500K Settlement for Woman Whose Arm Was Amputated After a Police Car Smashed into Victim’s Car

A woman whose left arm was amputated after an Atlanta Police Department patrol car smashed into the side of her car in February 2018 at an intersection will receive a $500,000 settlement from the city of Atlanta to compensate her for her serious injuries.

The victim, Lisa Williams, was driving through the intersection of Peeples Street at Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard in Atlanta on Feb. 21, 2018, when she was T-boned by a police car that ran through a red light at the intersection with its lights and siren operating as it was responding to an emergency call, according to a Jan. 16 story by NBC Channel 11 Alive in Atlanta.

The force of the crash pushed Williams’ SUV, pinning it to a pole, which violently ripped her arm from her body, the station reported.

The Atlanta police car was being driven by Officer Dejoira Phillips, who was later indicted on criminal charges in connection with the crash. The charges include two felonies: serious injury by vehicle and violation of oath of office. She was also charged with two misdemeanors: failure to obey traffic control device and reckless driving.

Williams filed a civil lawsuit against the city in 2018. Williams’ arm had to be amputated between the shoulder and elbow at the scene of the crash, the suit stated.

The $500,000 will be paid out of the city’s general fund once it is approved by the city council.
