Transvaginal Mesh FAQ

What is transvaginal mesh?

Transvaginal mesh (TVM) is a synthetic netting implanted in women to treat pelvic organ prolapse (when pelvic organs fall out of place) and stress urinary incontinence (involuntary urine leakage).

Worldwide, hundreds of thousands of women have undergone surgery to implant transvaginal mesh. Unfortunately, tens of thousands of those women have suffered from unexpected transvaginal mesh injuries.

What injuries do transvaginal mesh implants cause?

Transvaginal meshes have been shown to cause numerous injuries, including:

  • Infections
  • Internal bleeding
  • Nerve damage
  • Perforation of other organs and blood vessels
  • Erosion of the vaginal mesh
  • Problems/pain urinating
  • Return of the condition treated (incontinence or pelvic recurrence)
  • Pain during sexual intercourse

Can I sue for my vaginal mesh injuries?

Most likely. In fact, thousands of women have already brought lawsuits against TVM companies for their vaginal mesh injuries. For example, one woman recovered more than $11 million, including $7.76 million in punitive damages, after her Gynecare Prolift transvaginal mesh eroded and caused her to undergo at least 18 surgeries to repair the damage.

Every transvaginal mesh case will be unique and lead to different results. However, if you have been injured by your transvaginal mesh, you can and should hold your TVM company accountable.

How much money will I get for my transvaginal mesh injuries?

The amount of money you can recover by suing your transvaginal mesh company will depend on several factors, including:

  • The severity of your injuries
  • The permanency of your injuries
  • The cost of revision surgeries and rehabilitation
  • The amount of pain and suffering you have experienced
  • The loss of income you have suffered as a result of your mesh injuries
  • Which company manufactured your transvaginal mesh
  • The warnings you received prior to vaginal mesh surgery

Even the attorney you hire and the judge overseeing your case can affect the outcome. That is why it is important to hire an experienced transvaginal mesh attorney who will uncover evidence of all of your injuries — not just your physical injuries, but also the economic and psychological injuries you have suffered.

How many women have been injured by transvaginal meshes?

If you have been injured by a transvaginal mesh implant, you are not alone. More than 4,000 women have lodged complaints with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding their transvaginal meshes, and there are more than 20,000 cases in federal court.

What is the FDA saying about transvaginal mesh implants?

The FDA has issued multiple public health notifications highlighting the complications caused by transvaginal mesh implants, stating that “surgical mesh for transvaginal repair of POP [is] an area of continuing serious concern. … Serious complications associated with surgical mesh for transvaginal repair of POP are not rare.” It offered a series of recommendations for health care providers and patients and persuaded some manufacturers to take their transvaginal mesh products off the market.

In 2012, the FDA issued “522 orders” to companies, requiring them to study the risks of transvaginal mesh implants.

Why are transvaginal mesh products still on the market?

While some vaginal mesh companies have removed their products from the market, others argue that the meshes are not defective and instead point a finger back at the surgeons who installed the meshes. They also argue that the meshes have benefited or “cured” thousands of women suffering from pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence.

The results of studies ordered by the FDA in 2012 may lead to additional recalls.

  • American Medical Systems Inc.
  • Boston Scientific Corp.

  • Colopast Corp.
