$1.37M Settlement for Family of Couple Killed in Crash with Truck

The estate of a young couple who were killed when a tractor-trailer rear-ended their car on July 1, 2013 in Pontiac, Mich., will receive a $1.37 million settlement from the furniture company that owned the truck that caused the deadly crash.
Killed in the crash were 34-year-old Lonny Moore, Jr. and 25-year-old Kari Michelle Hinspeter, who were on their way to a babysitter’s house to pick up their five-month-old son, Jayce Moore, after spending a rare night out together in downtown Detroit, according to a Dec. 11 story on MLive.com.
The crash occurred as Moore and Hinspeter were driving at a reduced speed on northbound I-75 north of Rochester Road with their emergency flashers on, the story reported. As they drove on the highway, a tractor-trailer owned by Art Van Furniture of Warren, Mich., slammed into the rear of their car, setting off a fireball that engulfed the car in flames and dragged it down the roadway, the story reported. Moore and Hinspeter died in the crash, which left the vehicle barely recognizable.
The $1.37 million settlement was awarded to couple’s surviving son. The couple had planned to get married, the paper reported.
The plaintiffs argued that the truck was speeding and that its driver was not paying attention at the time of the crash, the report stated.
The crash left the interstate closed for more than six hours after the incident, according to a July 1, 2013 story in The Oakland Press. Both victims had to be identified through dental records, the story reported. The driver of the tractor-trailer survived and had only minor injuries.
