$725,000 Settlement to Woman Who Suffered Brain Injury in Car Crash

A 26-year-old woman who suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2012 when she was hurt in a car crash in Wayne, Pa., has been awarded a settlement of $725,000 as part of a JAMS mediation process.
The victim, Jillian Schonberg, who was 23 years old at the time of the Sept. 12, 2012 crash, was driving southbound on Chapel Road in Wayne when a pickup truck being driven by Christopher Maturo ran a red light while eastbound on Lancaster Avenue, smashing into Schonberg’s car, according to a Sept. 1 story in The Legal Intelligencer. Maturo’s truck was towing a trailer owned by Rick’s Lawn and Landscaping LLC at the time of the accident, the story reported.
Following the incident, Schonberg sued Maturo in Common Pleas Court in Philadelphia seeking damages for her brain injury, disc herniation and other injuries resulting from the crash, the story reported. The case was settled on Aug. 7.
Schonberg “required neck surgery, treatment with a pain management specialist, epidural steroid injections, treatment with orthopedic surgeons and a neurosurgeon, neuropsychological testing, treatment with a brain-injury specialist, physical therapy, occupational therapy” and other treatments, the story continued.
Before the crash, the victim had been enrolled in a physical therapy assistant’s program at Harcum College, but she was unable to complete her studies due to her injuries, the report stated. Her injuries later caused her to miss time from work in a company where she had secured a job and she has not worked since May, the story said. That interrupted work history helped lead to the settlement which she was awarded.
