$200K Settlement to Ohio Man Injured in Car-Ambulance Crash

A $200,000 settlement has been reached between the City of Columbus, Ohio, and an Ohio driver whose car was struck by an ambulance that was being driven by a city firefighter in 2013.

The victim, Tyrone Powell, suffered a broken leg and head contusions when the ambulance collided with his car at Mooberry Street and Parsons Avenue in Columbus in December 2013, according to a Sept. 19 story by The Legal Intelligencer.

Powell’s car was struck by an ambulance that was being driven by Columbus firefighter and paramedic Patrick Dunbrack, who was turning the vehicle left onto Parsons Avenue off Mooberry Street when he hit Powell’s car, the story reported. Powell’s car was traveling north on Parsons Avenue.

The firefighter was not responding to an emergency at the time of the crash, and a police report determined that Dunbrack failed to yield, the story continued.

Powell’s attorney said Powell will require lifelong medical attention due to his crash injuries and that he missed 12 weeks of work after the incident, according to the story. The city’s ambulance “was significantly damaged” in the collision, the report stated.

Because Dunbrack was not responding to an emergency, the city was not covered under immunity allowed in state law for first responders in vehicle crashes, the story said.
