Jury Awards $4.9M to Man Who Loses His Leg After Blood Clot Treatment

A Florida jury has awarded a $4.9 million verdict to a man who had to have his left leg amputated below the knee after a surgeon allegedly failed to properly treat him for a blood clot in 2013.

The patient, Samuel Gray, who was 61 years old at the time of the treatment, had gone to Winter Haven Hospital in Winter Haven, Fla., where he saw a vascular surgeon, Dr. Panagiotis Iakovidis, and complained about feeling severe lower leg pain, according to a July 5 story by the Courtroom View Network (CVN).  Gray.

Gray’s lawsuit, which alleged medical negligence, asserted that Iakovidis delayed Gray’s treatment after the patient had arrived at the hospital, leading to the loss of his leg a few days later, the story reported.

After a six-day trial, the jury in Florida’s 10th Circuit in Polk County deliberated for about four hours before ruling in Gray’s favor.

The verdict included $4 million for Gray’s pain and suffering, as well as $300,000 to the victim’s wife.

The defense had only offered a $15,000 pre-trial settlement offer, which was rejected, according to his attorneys. The doctor’s defense team had argued that the patient lost his leg due to chronic artery disease, and not due to the blood clot and its treatment.
