$10M Settlement to Woman Who Lost Both Legs After Being Struck by Bus
By Dean I. Weitzman, Esq. on September 28th, 2018
A 65-year-old West Orange, N.J., woman who had to have both legs amputated after being struck and crushed by a New Jersey Transit bus in 2016 has reached a $10 million settlement with the transit agency.
The victim, Claire Dertouzos, was struck by the bus on May 28, 2016, as she was trying to cross Mount Prospect Avenue at Heller Parkway in Newark, according to a Sept. 25 story by NJ.com. The bus was making a left turn as it struck the victim. The driver said he did not see Dertouzos before the rear wheels of the bus ran over her legs as she was in the crosswalk, according to the report.
The victim’s legs were crushed and seriously injured by the impact of the bus and had to be amputated above both knees, according to her attorneys. Since her devastating injury, Dertouzos now uses a wheelchair due to the loss of her legs.
