Car Accident Lawyer Wins Settlement for Driver Whose Car Fell 7 Stories From a High-Rise Parking Garage After Accidentally Driving Through Outdated Cable Barriers That Failed to Stop Her Car

A Texas woman who was seriously hurt in 2017 when her car fell off the seventh floor of a high-rise parking garage to the ground below has reached a settlement with the owners of the parking garage where the dangerous incident occurred.

The driver, Christi Bowmer of Cedar Park, Texas, suffered a long list of injuries when her BMW drove through a set of cable retention wires on the seventh floor of the garage when she accidentally hit the gas instead of the brakes in her car, according to an April 3 story by KVUE TV in Austin.

The crash happened about 8:30 a.m. on July 13, 2017, at the Littlefield parking garage near Sixth Street and Brazos streets. The falling car ruptured a gas line on a nearby building and then landed on a Chevrolet Tahoe that was driving northbound in the alley between Fifth and Sixth streets, the story reported. The driver of the Tahoe was not injured.

Bowmer, who was 49 at the time of the accident, filed a lawsuit seeking at least $1 million in damages from the owners of the parking garage, GTT Parking LP. The lawsuit alleged that the company was negligent by not upgrading the cable barrier system that failed to keep her car from going seven stories over the edge of the building, the story states.

The woman’s medical treatments for her related injuries have so far cost more than $1 million, she told the TV station when her lawsuit was filed. The case was recently settled but the terms were not disclosed due to a confidentiality agreement.

The parking garage, which was built in 1979, had an earlier incident in September 2016, when an SUV was prevented from falling from the ninth floor of the garage by cables which stopped the vehicle, the story said.
