Car Crash Lawyer Wins $2.2M Settlement for Driver in Crash with School Bus

A 34-year-old Illinois woman will receive a $2.2 million settlement after she suffered broken bones and burns when her car collided with a school bus which pulled out at an intersection into her path in 2015.

The victim, Carrie Scheetz, was driving home from work on a county road in Rock Creek Township on Aug. 31, 2015 when the crash occurred, according to a July 9 story by WGEM News of Quincy, Illinois.

The school bus approached the intersection, stopped at a stop sign and then proceeded to pull out into the path of Scheetz’s Jeep Wrangler, which was traveling at 82 mph in a posted 55 mph zone, the report continued. Scheetz said she saw the bus but did not slow down or stop because she did not have a stop sign. The bus was being driven by Steven Holsted on behalf of the Nauvoo-Colusa Community School District No. 325.

After the collision, Scheetz was trapped in her Jeep for 12 minutes as it caught fire before a passerby got her out of the vehicle, the story continued. She suffered a fractured femur, broken ribs and second and third degree burns in the crash.

Scheetz sued the bus driver and the school district, alleging negligence in connection with the crash and claiming that the bus driver failed to keep a proper lookout and did not allow Scheetz to cross where she had the right of way.
