Car Accident Lawyer Gets $4.35M Settlement for Injured Trash Truck Worker

A trash truck worker whose leg had to be amputated after he was struck by a commercial truck while he collected trash in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, in October 2018 has reached a $4.35 million settlement to compensate him for his severe injuries.

The victim, Lamar Bland, who is now 28 years old, was collecting trash and placing it into a trash truck about 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 2, 2018 when he was struck by a commercial truck that was owned by Unique Scaffolding Systems of Kenilworth, N.J., according to a July 17 story by NJ.com. Bland was loading the trash into the truck in the 900 block of Ocean Road, Route 88, when the scaffolding truck struck him, pinning him between the vehicles.

His left leg was fractured in at least three places and despite several operations, the leg could not be saved and had to be amputated below the knee. Bland lives in Toms River, N.J.

The scaffolding truck was being driven by Unique Scaffolding Systems employee, Juan Jorge, when the crash occurred. Jorge, 29, of Point Pleasant, pleaded guilty to careless driving and paid a $239 fine in connection with the incident, the story reported. Bland’s lawyer said Jorge explained that his truck’s windshield was fogged up that morning and that the crash occurred when he took his eyes off the road to reach for his coffee cup.

Bland continues to suffer pain and medical expenses due to his life-altering injuries, the story states. He also suffers from anxiety and had symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in the aftermath of the crash and loss of his leg.

Under the settlement agreement, the two insurers for Unique Scaffolding Systems will pay a total of $4,350,000 to Bland.
