How You Can Choose the Right Lawyer for Your Family

Every Sunday morning, callers to our MyPhillyLawyer Court Radio broadcast dial in to talk about their legal situations.

And inevitably, some of our callers, who are often avid fans of the show, explain that they were recently involved in a car crash, hired a lawyer and now are not happy with their choice of representation. They ask to make an appointment with our firm to discuss their situation.

Then I ask them why they didn’t call me here at MyPhillyLawyer first, before hiring their attorney.

Their answers are usually the same – they tell us they were initially approached at the crash scene by a lawyer who gave them their business card, or that they were referred to an attorney by a family member or friend and took their advice in the heat of the moment.

I can understand how that can happen, but lawyers who are dragging you from an accident scene to their offices are not usually the best attorneys in the city. As a result, you will likely deal with someone who is a subpar attorney.

The good news is you can change attorneys like you change a T-shirt.

So, what should one look for when hiring a lawyer to assist with your legal needs?

First, ask friends you trust for recommendations about attorneys they have worked with in the past. Do deep searches on the internet to peruse attorneys who specialize in the legal areas where you need assistance, from car crashes to personal injury cases to medical malpractice, birth injuries, wrongful death, work injuries, estates and wills, divorce, tax issues, child custody cases, criminal law and more.

Read the reviews you find online for a start to get some ideas about how the attorneys are viewed by others.

Then continue your search by making appointments and meeting with prospective attorneys and visiting his or her law office. That setting should reflect the attorney’s experience, performance and professional expertise.

Ask a lot of questions. Ask how they have handled similar cases and what their success rates have been in the past. Ask about their support team, from their investigators to legal assistants and their office staff. You want to bring on a legal team that can help you and your family with your case, so be sure the attorney you are talking with can deliver on your requirements.

If the office and the attorney don’t give you confidence in handling your legal case, then you should probably keep looking for representation.

Your attorney must be able to explain each aspect of your case from beginning to end in a way you can understand. They need to be caring, compassionate, active and professional advocates for you and your family.

I personally take the time to speak with any prospective client who calls for me here at MyPhillyLawyer. You want to hire a lawyer who makes you feel comfortable and cared for as they take on your case and assist you.

Of course, if you already made a wrong decision and hired a lawyer who is not meeting your needs, then move on and find new counsel. It’s within your rights and can be done at your whim.

Additional helpful advice about choosing the right attorney is available from the American Bar Association, which offers tips on using local referral services and other resources to get information about prospective candidates.

Finding the right attorney to help you is an investment that will reap rewards for you and your family. Finding the right attorney who will make you feel confident and well-represented is priceless.
