Route 581 Construction Site Truck Crash

A four-vehicle crash in a highway work zone claimed the life of a construction worker in Cumberland County. The crash occurred in April 2025, according to a report from WGAL

The crash took place on Route 581 between Exit 3 (Route 11/Carlisle Pike) and Exit 5 (Route 15/Gettysburg/Camp Hill). The right lane was closed for construction at the time. A construction vehicle was in the closed right lane with two workers inside that vehicle.

A FedEx tractor hauling two trailers entered the closed right lane and rear-ended the construction vehicle. The truck then hit a second vehicle. Flying debris from the wreck caused additional damage to a fourth vehicle traveling through the area, according to police.

The two construction workers were taken to a local hospital. One worker was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The other suffered moderate injuries.

A fuel spill and significant debris resulted in the complete closure of eastbound Route 581 while emergency responders dealt with the scene.

Construction and Large Truck Crashes: What Pennsylvanians Need to Know

Construction remains one of the deadliest occupations in Pennsylvania. Statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reveal that in 2023, Pennsylvania experienced 30 deaths in the construction industry. Construction had the highest total number of deaths of any industry in the state that year.

Transportation and material movers faced the highest rate of fatal work accidents of any occupation in 2023. That year, 46 transportation and material moving workers died in work-related accidents. Thirty percent of all fatal occupational injuries occurred in transportation jobs in Pennsylvania in 2023.

Transportation jobs are common in the construction industry. Construction workers frequently transport workers and materials on trucks, forklifts, cranes, and other conveyances designed to move people and materials. Construction workers who work on Pennsylvania roadways also face regular exposure to transportation workers who drive commercial trucks and other vehicles. When the state’s deadliest industry and deadliest job role overlap, the risk of serious harm rises.

Large truck accidents can occur both inside and outside of highway work zones. In 2023, 138 truck crashes on Pennsylvania roads proved fatal. This number was the third-highest in the last five years, following 2022’s rate of 145 fatal crashes and 2021’s rate of 144.

Common causes of large truck crashes in 2023 include:

  • Tire and wheel issues,
  • Brake issues,
  • Problems with cargo shifting, overloaded cargo, or trailer connections,
  • Failures of steering and power train systems,
  • Driver error, drowsiness, distraction, or inebriation,
  • Negligent hiring or improper training by trucking companies.

Any of these failures can trigger a truck crash. When such a crash occurs, others around the truck may be powerless to avoid the crash or protect themselves. They may not realize anything is wrong until it is too late to prevent serious harm.

What To Do If You’re Injured in a Truck-Car Collision in Philly

If you’re injured in a truck crash, you can take steps to protect your rights.

  • First, get to safety. Move vehicles and people out of the way of traffic if you can. Do not move a seriously injured person, however. Use flares, flashlights, or vehicle lights to warn oncoming traffic about the crash site.
  • Call 911 or have someone at the scene make the call. First responders can secure the scene, divert traffic, tend to injuries, and make a record of what happened.
  • Gather any information you can. Make a voice or video recording to document what you saw, heard, and felt during the crash. Take photos or make a video of the scene. Get contact information from any witnesses to the accident.
  • Get medical attention right away. In an emergency, get emergency care. If you don’t get emergency care, see a doctor as soon as possible to document your injuries. Save your paperwork from these visits, along with any accident reports, vehicle repair bills, and other information related to your case.

You may have been unable to do any of these steps if you were severely injured. Speak to an experienced attorney as soon as possible. Your lawyer can help you gather evidence and build a compensation case.
