Philadelphia Boy Scout Sex Abuse Lawyer

The “Perversion Files” sounds like something right out of a movie; confidential information related to sexual atrocities against unwilling victims. Unfortunately, the “Perversion Files” are not right out of a movie and not only do they contain information relating to sexual atrocities against unwilling victims, they are the property of the Boy Scouts of America.

Thousands of files dating from 1970 to 1991, with some even more recent than that, are hiding the secrets of sexual abuse carried out against young boy scouts. They document horrific sex abuse allegations. In some states, Scouts were molested on camping trips, forced to have oral sex with their troop leaders and stripped and rubbed with ice cubes. There are over 100,000 scouting units nationwide.

And the perpetrators? Scouting officials urged them to resign and then, in many cases, covered the predator’s tracks and buried the information. What is more shocking is that the blacklist of names of men, child molesters, dates back to 1919 with no record of the abuses being reported to the police. Over 7,800 Boy Scouts of America leaders across the country have been accused of child sex abuse.

The files, thoroughly combed through by the L.A. Times, reveal a well-known pattern typically used by molesters for grooming their targets until they are compliant and trust the Scout Master. In roughly 47 percent of the cases, the molesters were single, did not have a child in the movement and worked with the children alone. The practice of being alone with a young scout was banned in 1987, but by then there were hundreds of victims.

Grooming a targeted young boy often included letting him watch pornography, drink alcohol, drive cars, play around with the older man while everyone was in the showers, having sleepovers, skinny dipping and then progressing to one-on-one activities. Soon, physical boundaries did not matter, because they had been breached by a pedophile’s manipulative behavior.

The baffling question for many is why the Boy Scouts of America did nothing about these predators. Why they did not protect them instead of creating a file holding all the details in confidence and making sure it was never revealed? Why did they allegedly create a form letter to send to dismissed pedophiles that said, in part: “We are making no accusations and will not release this information to anyone, so our action in no way will affect your standing in the community.” By turning their heads the other way and not protecting or keeping the boys safe, the organization paved the way for the predators to continue preying on young boys and men across the nation.

At least 256 former Pennsylvania Boy Scout leaders and thousands of others across the United States documented in the “Perversion Files” were recently named. The sexual abuse is not the fault of the victim. You did not entice the predator. You did not encourage the predator.
